According to police officials, the accused, a 65-year-old local labourer, lured the girl with the promise of food and took her to a cattle shed. There, the suspect subjected the child to a brutal assault before murdering her. When the family began a frantic search, the child’s mutilated and bloodied body was discovered.

Police Action and Community Outrage

Local residents, upon discovering the crime, erupted in anger. Hundreds of villagers gathered near the local police chowki to demand immediate and severe action against the accused. The situation escalated when protestors blocked the busy Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway, causing significant traffic disruptions and drawing the attention of state authorities.

Pune (Rural) Superintendent of Police Sandip Singh Gill rushed to the scene to pacify the agitated crowd. SP Gill assured the locals that the investigation is being fast-tracked.

“The accused has a criminal background, with cases registered against him in 1998 and 2015, though he was acquitted. We have registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act. A chargesheet will be filed within 15 days, and the trial will be held in a fast-track court,” SP Gill stated.

Political Fallout and Government Response

The incident has triggered a fierce political debate regarding the safety of women and children in the state.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis strongly condemned the incident, assuring swift and stringent justice. Expressing deep sorrow over the brutality, CM Fadnavis stated,

“The incident in Pune is extremely condemnable. We will demand in court that the accused receives the death penalty as soon as possible.”

Meanwhile, former Maharashtra Home Minister and NCP (SP) leader Anil Deshmukh also condemned the incident and echoed the demand for capital punishment. He criticized the delay in implementing the proposed Shakti Act, which aims to enforce stringent and timely punishments for sexual crimes.

The demand comes amid ongoing discussions in the Maharashtra legislative assembly regarding enhancements to the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita to ensure enhanced protection mechanisms and deterrence against violent crimes. As the investigation progresses, residents and civil society organizations continue to demand justice for the four-year-old victim.
