Pune: Metro Expansion to Uruli Kanchan Proposed to Ease Traffic and Boost Connectivity
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar announced on Friday that the Pune Metro route will likely be extended to Uruli Kanchan instead of terminating at Loni Kalbhor, addressing the city’s growing population and persistent traffic congestion on the Pune-Solapur highway.
“Planning should account for increasing urbanisation in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad and corresponding infrastructure needs,” Pawar emphasized.
Currently, Pune Metro operates on a 33 km network, with an additional 33 km under construction. The proposed extension is part of the Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for the Pune Metropolitan Region, submitted by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro). The long-term vision includes developing 312 km of metro and metro-light corridors by 2054, alongside upgrades to road networks, bus rapid transit systems, cycling paths, and pedestrian infrastructure.
Uruli Kanchan, known for its BAIF research centre and strong agricultural base, has seen rapid urbanisation in recent years. Officials believe extending metro services to this area will alleviate traffic congestion, enhance regional connectivity, and promote balanced growth in eastern Pune.
Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Pune Metro, stated, “We will study the feasibility of extending the route beyond Loni to Uruli Kanchan in phases. A detailed project report (DPR) will be prepared. The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) will need to submit a formal request before we proceed further.”
Gadgil added that the extension would benefit daily commuters and unlock new economic opportunities in the eastern corridor.
