Maharashtra to Allow Deep-Sea Fishing Beyond 12 Nautical Miles from the Coast From August 1
Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced that deep sea fishing beyond 12 nautical miles from the coast will be permitted from August 1. The relaxation applies only to fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), while the annual fishing ban in the state’s territorial waters will continue until August 15.
According to the Department of Fisheries, fishing from the coastline up to 12 nautical miles remains prohibited as part of the annual monsoon fishing ban. The restriction is imposed every year to protect marine life during its breeding season and support the conservation of fish stocks.
Fishing vessels operating in the Exclusive Economic Zone, which lies beyond the 12-nautical-mile limit, can resume operations from August 1. However, fishermen have been instructed to strictly follow all applicable rules and regulations while carrying out deep sea fishing activities.
The government has also warned that any illegal fishing within Maharashtra’s territorial waters during the ban period will invite strict action.
Officials said the seasonal ban is aimed at ensuring sustainable fisheries by allowing fish to breed during the monsoon, helping maintain marine biodiversity and improving fish availability in the long run.
