Pune Metro Line 3: PM Modi to Virtually Inaugurate Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro; 17 Stations Ready

Pune Metro Line 3 inauguration

Pune Metro Line 3, connecting Hinjawadi to Shivajinagar, will be virtually inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 3, 2026. Officials from the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) have been instructed to complete the technical preparations and event arrangements ahead of the proposed launch.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and other senior dignitaries are expected to attend the main ceremony at Shree Chhatrapati Shivaji Balewadi Stadium. PMRDA has reserved the stadium complex from November 1 to 5 for the event.

The virtual event is also expected to include foundation stone-laying ceremonies for several proposed metro expansion routes under Maha Metro’s Phase 2. These include a new line connecting Khadakwasla to Kharadi, the extension of Line 2 from Ramwadi to Wagholi, the extension of the Vanaz line to Chandani Chowk, and a connector between Nal Stop and Manikbagh linking Line 2 with the proposed Line 4.

The 23.203-km elevated Pune Metro Line 3 corridor connects Rajiv Gandhi IT Park in Hinjawadi (Maan) with District Court, also known as Civil Court, in central Pune. Of the corridor’s 23 stations, 17 have received mandatory safety clearance from the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS).

On September 23, the CMRS cleared five additional stations towards central Pune, taking the number of stations approved for the initial opening phase from 12 to 17. With both the Maan (Megapolis Circle) starting terminal and the District Court terminal included in the cleared section, commuters are expected to be able to travel across the entire corridor from day one.

Six stations will remain temporarily closed during the initial rollout while finishing work continues. These are Laxmi Nagar, Balewadi Phata, Baner Gaon, Baner, Reserve Bank of India and Shivajinagar. PMRDA officials have said final technical refinements are being completed, while passenger fares are expected to be announced in the coming days.

However, since these stations are wayside stations and not the first and the last stations, it means that end-to-end service will be available between Megapolis Circle and Pune District Court.

Pune Metro Line 3 is being implemented under a public-private partnership (PPP) model, using the Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) framework, with a 35-year concession. The project is being executed by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), a joint venture between Tata Group’s TRIL Urban Transport and Siemens, at a total capital cost of ₹8,313 crore.

The project also includes a ₹277-crore integrated double-decker flyover at Ganeshkhind Road and University Junction, where the Aundh and Baner traffic ramps are already operational.

To improve access to the metro, PMRDA has approved a ₹426-crore, 19.2-km last-mile connectivity network covering eight key IT park stations, including Megapolis Circle, Quadron Circle, Shivaji Chowk and Hinjawadi. The network will include pedestrian walkways, cycle tracks and upgraded bus bays.
