I will Return to Bangladesh This Year; Do Not Fear Death: Sheikh Hasina

Sheikh Hasina

In an extraordinary assertion of political defiance, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to return to her homeland before the end of the year, dismissing both the legal threats against her and the political restructuring of the nation.

Communicating from an undisclosed location in her first major address to the media since her ouster on August 5, 2025, Hasina launched a scathing critique of the current administration, characterizing the country’s trajectory as a shift toward a “failed-state model” reminiscent of Pakistan. She was responding to questions in an email interview to NDTV.

Following her departure from Dhaka, the interim government, lead by Mohammad Yunus, and the subsequent Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) administration, initiated sweeping legal proceedings against Hasina, culminating in a death sentence. Hasina remains unmoved by the verdict.

“I do not fear death,” Hasina stated flatly, brushing aside the judicial rulings as purely vindictive political maneuvering.

On the Awami League’s Political Future

Addressing the official ban imposed on her party, the Awami League, Hasina argued that a political movement with a 77-year history and deep-rooted public support cannot simply be erased by administrative decree. She pointed to spontaneous, local processions continuing across Bangladesh as proof of the party’s organic resilience.

Furthermore, she unequivocally dismissed rumors of any backchannel negotiations or secret political compromises with the BNP leadership aimed at lifting the ban.

Alarm Over Minority Safety

A central focus of Hasina’s commentary was the targeted violence against religious minorities, particularly Hindus, that escalated following the political transition last August. She warned that the targeted destruction of homes, businesses, and places of worship is an existential threat to the secular foundation of the nation, asserting that “an attack on minorities is an attack on our independence.”

The Road Ahead

While Hasina remained tight-lipped about the exact logistics and security arrangements for her homecoming, her definitive timeline sets up a high-stakes political showdown in Dhaka later this year.
