According to local police and rescue authorities, a heavy goods container travelling from Satara towards Mumbai suffered brake failure while descending the slope near Bhumkar Bridge.

The container, which was moving at high speed, hit a truck ahead of it, leading to a chain collision involving three heavy goods trucks and a few other vehicles.

The impact crushed the front cabin of the container truck, trapping its occupants. Two people travelling in the vehicle cabins died on the spot, while three to four others suffered severe injuries.

Narhe police, fire brigade personnel and local residents reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. Rescuers had to cut open the mangled cabin of the container to remove a driver trapped inside.

The injured were taken to nearby hospitals, including Bharati Hospital, for treatment.

The wrecked vehicles blocked the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass and caused a major traffic jam on the Mumbai-Bengaluru Highway. Police used heavy cranes to remove the damaged trucks, following which the route was partially reopened for traffic.

The accident is separate from the multi-vehicle collision reported four to five days earlier near Dari Bridge on the same highway stretch.
