The Prime Minister said Metro services were now operational in 26 cities across India, with the country’s total Metro network expanding from approximately 248 km to more than 1,200 km. More than one crore passengers travel by Metro every day. Maharashtra alone has around 175 km of operational Metro network.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Maharashtra Government was committed to expanding the Metro network and strengthening public transport. Around 120 km of additional Metro corridors would provide modern, safe and environment-friendly transport facilities. He said the projects would reduce travel time and support trade, industry, employment and economic activity. An investment of approximately ₹5,000 crore would give a significant boost to the urban economy.
The new corridor will initially serve 17 stations: Maan, Maan-MIDC Circle Phase II, Maan Bus Depot, Hinjawadi Phase II-Circle II, Hinjawadi Phase II-Circle I, Padmabhushan Chowk, Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk, Hinjawadi Phase I, Wakad Chowk, Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Mahalunge, Mitcon Balewadi, R K Laxman Museum Balewadi, Aundh, Sakal Nagar, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Agriculture College and District Court.
At District Court station, passengers will be able to interchange with MahaMetro’s Line 1, connecting Pimpri-Chinchwad with Swargate, and Line 2, connecting Vanaz with Ramwadi. A common mobile application and the One Pune Card will facilitate travel across the Metro network.
The proposed fare structure for Line 3 ranges from ₹12 for journeys up to 2 km to ₹62 for journeys exceeding 18 km. Passengers travelling between 2 and 4 km will pay ₹25, while fares for 4–8 km, 8–12 km and 12–18 km will be ₹37, ₹43 and ₹49, respectively.
The fares are higher than those on the existing Pune Metro network, where the maximum fare is ₹35. PMRDA Commissioner Abhijit Chaudhari said Line 3 fares had been fixed in accordance with the concession agreement because the corridor was being developed under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. He said the fares were not high compared with other Metro projects developed under the same model.
Anilkumar Saini, CEO of IT City Metro Rail Limited (PITCMRL), said the fare structure would be reviewed after six months. The operator expects daily ridership to reach between 2 lakh and 2.5 lakh passengers.
The first train from Maan will depart at 6 am, while the last train towards District Court will leave at 10:30 pm. The last train from District Court towards Maan will depart at 11:40 pm. Trains will operate at six-minute intervals during peak hours and 12-minute intervals during non-peak hours.
A distinctive feature of Pune Metro Line 3 is that all train services will be operated by women train operators. Around 30 per cent of the corridor’s energy requirement will be met through solar power.
The corridor is expected to provide a direct Metro connection between Hinjawadi IT Park and central Pune, offering relief to IT professionals, students and daily commuters by reducing travel time and helping ease road traffic congestion.
The Pune Metro project has involved substantial investment, with more than ₹8,300 crore spent on Phase I and approximately ₹13,500 crore expected to be invested in Phase II. The combined expenditure on the two phases is estimated to exceed ₹22,000 crore.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma and Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Manohar Lal attended the programme virtually. Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation Murlidhar Mohol, and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis were present.
