Mumbai: The Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC) has made the ‘Know Your Doctor’ (KYD) system mandatory for all Registered Medical Practitioners (RMPs) registered with the council, requiring them to display an officially issued physical KYD QR-code plate at every place where they practise.
According to a notification issued by the Maharashtra Medical Council on September 9, 2026, compliance with the new requirement must be completed on or before October 31, 2026.
The council said the KYD system has been introduced following assurances given on the floor of the Maharashtra Legislature regarding bogus and fake medical practitioners and in compliance with a government letter dated July 7, 2025.
Under the system, patients will be able to instantly verify the registration status of a medical practitioner by scanning the officially issued physical KYD QR-code plate. The council said the measure is aimed at helping curb unqualified practitioners.
Every registered medical practitioner must enrol on the KYD portal and display the official physical plate at each place of practice. A separate plate is required for every practising location.
The plate must be displayed prominently in the waiting area so that patients can easily scan it. The MMC has specifically clarified that digital images, screenshots and paper printouts are not valid and that only the official physical plate will be recognised.
Hospitals, nursing homes, institutions and clinics have also been directed to ensure that every RMP working at their premises displays the required plate.
Complaint-Based Enforcement, Penalties for Non-Compliance
The MMC notification states that enforcement will be complaint-based only, with no field inspections. Action will be initiated only on a verified public complaint and will apply cumulatively across all places of work.
For a first default, the practitioner will receive a warning letter and will have 15 days to enrol and display the plate.
A second default will attract a penalty of Rs 5,000, along with a further 15 days to comply. A third default will result in a penalty of Rs 15,000, with another seven days given for compliance. Thereafter, disciplinary action may follow.
Registered medical practitioners have been asked to visit the KYD portal at https://www.kyd.co.in/ and select “Login as a Doctor”. They must enter their MMC registration number and log in using the OTP sent to their MMC-registered mobile number.
After verifying their details, practitioners must indicate the number of plates required, one for each place of work, and make the prescribed payment.
The notification states that the KYD requirement has been issued with the approval of Dr. Nivky Rughvanti, Prashasak, Maharashtra Medical Council. The notification has been signed by Dr. Rakesh Waghmare, Registrar, Maharashtra Medical Council.
