Humble Pichkari for Holi Could Cause Inconvenience at Airports: CSMIA Issues New Travel Advisory

Mumbai Airport advises packing gun-shaped pichkaris

MUMBAI – As the city gears up for the vibrant festival of Holi, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has issued a “pack check” advisory to ensure a seamless journey for passengers. While festivals bring color and celebration, they also bring unique security challenges, specifically regarding traditional water cannons, or pichkaris.

Airport authorities are urging travelers to be mindful of how they pack their festive gear. Security protocols at CSMIA indicate that gun-shaped pichkaris may be restricted in cabin baggage. To avoid unexpected pauses or confiscations at the security gate, passengers are advised to place these items in their check-in baggage instead.

Smooth Travels During the Festive Rush

The advisory comes as part of a broader effort to reduce congestion at security checkpoints during high-traffic holiday periods. “A quick pack check before you travel can help keep your journey seamless from the start,” the airport noted in a statement aimed at holiday travelers.

For those flying out of Mumbai to celebrate with family, the rule of thumb is simple: if it looks like a weapon, even a brightly colored plastic one, it belongs in the hold, not the overhead bin.

By taking a few extra minutes to audit their luggage, passengers can ensure that their festive spirit remains intact from the terminal to their final destination.
