The iconic Neral-Matheran toy train, affectionately known as the “Queen of Matheran,” will remain suspended from June 1 to October 15 due to monsoon safety precautions, the Central Railway announced today. The decision follows landslides along the vulnerable Aman Lodge–Water Pipe stretch after heavy pre-monsoon showers late last month.

Why the Suspension?

The 21-kilometer heritage narrow-gauge route, a UNESCO-nominated track, faces heightened risks during rains due to its steep gradients and fragile soil. “Landslides have already occurred near Water Pipe station,” said a senior railway official. “Resuming full operations now would endanger passengers.” A safety inspection is scheduled for October 15 before services restart.

What’s Still Running?

While the main Neral–Matheran passenger service is paused, key alternatives remain operational:

✔ Aman Lodge–Matheran Shuttle – Runs daily as usual, helping tourists and locals cover the final stretch.
✔ Freight Mini-Train – Operates Monday–Friday (8:20 AM departure from Neral) to transport essentials.
✔ Weekend Special – Every Saturday, an empty train leaves Neral at 8:50 AM, converts to a passenger shuttle at Matheran, and returns by 2:45 PM with extra coaches.

Impact on Tourism & Locals

The suspension coincides with peak monsoon tourism when Matheran’s lush greenery attracts weekend crowds. Hotel owner Priya Deshmukh said, “The shuttle helps, but many visitors miss the full toy train experience.” Meanwhile, the freight service ensures groceries and medicines reach the car-free hill station without disruption.

Travel Advisory

Tourists can reach Aman Lodge via taxi from Neral and switch to the shuttle. Authorities urge visitors to check weather alerts, as trekkers often face route closures during heavy rains.
