Bengaluru, June 2: IndiGo has signed a landmark agreement with Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) to set up a ₹1,100 crore Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility at Kempegowda International Airport, Bengaluru. This massive investment will not only support the maintenance of IndiGo’s expanding fleet but also generate over 750 high-skill jobs, bringing economic benefits to the region.

Spread across 31 acres, the MRO hub will feature:

  • Four hangars for servicing up to four wide-body or eight narrow-body aircraft.
  • One paint hangar to accommodate one wide-body or two narrow-body aircraft for their repainting requirements.
  • Full maintenance support for IndiGo’s fleet, including the A320, A321XLR, and upcoming Airbus A350s.
  • Capability to service aircraft from IndiGo’s codeshare partners.

The new facility aims to drastically reduce aircraft downtime, improve turnaround times, and enhance fleet availability. This is expected to make Bengaluru a strategic maintenance base not only for IndiGo but for the broader Indian aviation sector.

A Bengaluru Airport spokesperson said, “We are delighted to have IndiGo choose BLR Airport to set up its latest MRO facility. This collaboration strengthens our long-standing relationship and highlights the airport’s growing importance as an aviation hub.”

Beyond maintenance, the collaboration includes joint initiatives in network expansion, infrastructure development, and marketing, all of which will contribute to Bengaluru’s stature as a key domestic and international aviation centre.

Industries Minister M.B. Patil welcomed the development, stating, “Bengaluru is now poised to become Asia’s primary MRO centre. The Karnataka government is committed to making the state a global leader in aerospace and aviation manufacturing. IndiGo’s investment is a major step in that direction.”

By FY2031, the Kempegowda Airport is expected to handle 1,300 aircraft, rising to 2,100 by FY2037-38. The MRO facility is set to attract leading global OEMs and tier-1 suppliers, creating a ripple effect for ancillary industries, skill development, and vendor ecosystems.

This partnership marks a key milestone in strengthening India’s aviation infrastructure and boosting Karnataka’s economy through innovation, employment, and investment.
