Bengaluru–Pune Vande Bharat Sleeper: Travel Time Likely to Drop to 13 Hours
Travelling between two of India’s biggest technology hubs could soon become much faster. Indian Railways is planning a new Vande Bharat Sleeper train on the Mumbai–Bengaluru corridor, a move that could cut the Pune–Bengaluru train journey to about 13 hours, nearly six hours shorter than current travel times.
The development is being seen as a major boost for passengers travelling between Pune and Bengaluru, two cities with heavy movement of IT professionals, students, and business travellers.
Pune–Bengaluru Train Travel Time May Reduce by 5–6 Hours
At present, most trains between Pune and Bengaluru take 18 to 19 hours to cover the journey. The upcoming Vande Bharat sleeper service is expected to bring this down to around 12–13 hours, making overnight travel far more convenient.
If implemented as planned, passengers could board the train in the evening and reach their destination early the next morning.
The project is part of Indian Railways’ broader push to modernise long-distance rail travel through the sleeper version of the Vande Bharat train, designed specifically for overnight routes.
Route and Expected Stations
The proposed service will operate on the Mumbai–Bengaluru route, with Pune expected to be one of the major stops.
The likely route includes:
- Mumbai (CSMT)
- Pune
- Solapur
- Wadi
- Bengaluru
Track upgrades on some sections, including the Daund–Wadi and Wadi–Guntakal stretches, are expected to support higher speeds and smoother operations.
Premium Sleeper Train With Modern Facilities
Unlike the current Vande Bharat chair-car trains, this version will feature fully sleeper coaches, making it suitable for long overnight journeys.
Key expected features include:
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- AC First Class, AC 2-tier and AC 3-tier berths
- Automatic doors and improved safety systems
- Ergonomic berths for better comfort
- Advanced suspension for reduced noise and vibration
- Indigenous Kavach collision-prevention system
The train is expected to have 16 coaches with capacity for over 800 passengers.
Speeds Up to 180 km/h
The new sleeper trains are designed to run at top speeds of up to 160–180 km/h, although actual operating speeds will depend on track conditions and signalling upgrades.
Even with existing infrastructure constraints, the improved train design and upgraded sections of track could significantly reduce journey time compared with current express trains.
Boost for Travel Between Two Major Tech Cities
Pune and Bengaluru are among India’s largest technology and startup hubs, with frequent movement of professionals, students, and entrepreneurs between the two cities.
A faster overnight train could provide a strong alternative to flights and long road journeys, especially for travellers who prefer rail connectivity.
While ticket prices and the official launch date have not yet been announced, railway officials indicate that the service could begin once final approvals, scheduling, and infrastructure upgrades are completed.
If introduced as expected, the Bengaluru–Pune Vande Bharat Sleeper could become one of the fastest and most comfortable rail options on this busy inter-city corridor.
