Solid Waste Management Rules 2026: Who Qualifies as a Bulk Waste Generator and What Households Need to Do
Pune, September 23, 2026: Under the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026, institutions, commercial establishments and residential societies meeting any one of three specified criteria will be treated as Bulk Waste Generators (BWGs) and are required to register.
An entity qualifies as a Bulk Waste Generator if it meets at least one of these conditions:
- Building floor area of 20,000 sq metres or above
- Water consumption of 40,000 litres per day or more
- Solid waste generation of 100 kg per day or more
Government and private organisations falling under these criteria are required to register on the Central Pollution Control Board’s designated portal.
The rules also call for segregation of household waste at source into four categories, wet waste, dry waste, sanitary waste and special care waste.
The Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign is promoting this four-way segregation as a daily household practice.
