RPF constable shoots 4 dead on Jaipur-Mumbai train, arrested and motive behind the firing found

Jaipur Mumbai Train Shooting

Pune, July 31, 2023: A shocking incident of firing onboard the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Express train has left four people dead in Maharashtra on Monday morning. Railway Protection Force (RPF) Constable CT Chetan is alleged to have opened fire, shooting down four passengers, including an RPF assistant sub-inspector (ASI).

The incident occurred in the B5 coach of the Jaipur-Mumbai Central Superfast Express (Train number 12956), shortly after the train crossed Palghar Station. The victims include Chetan’s superior, ASI Tika Ram, and three civilian passengers, the details of whom have not yet been released. Chetan had been on escort duty at the time of the incident.

The RPF, in an official statement, confirmed that the constable was apprehended by police and the Deputy Commissioner of Police, North Government Railway Police, was informed promptly. The 30-year-old constable was arrested with his weapon, after attempting to flee the scene between Mira Road and Dahisar.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the constable was upset and mentally disturbed due to his recent transfer from Gujarat to Mumbai. The transfer had apparently caused distress in his family life, leading to a high level of mental stress and anger, believed to have been the trigger for the violent outburst.

All the victims’ bodies are being sent to Kandivali’s Shatabdi Hospital for post-mortem examinations, Western Railways confirmed.

The incident has left passengers and railway officials alike shocked and rattled, as they await further details from the ongoing investigations.
