Pune faces unprecedented heat with temperature breaching 43°C, more in store

Pune has been sizzling with extreme temperatures. Yesterday the temperature breached 43°C.

Pune, April 29, 2024: Yesterday on April 28, Koregaon Park registered a high temperature of 43.3 degrees Celsius while Wadgaonsheri registered 43 degrees. Shivajinagar recorded the hottest day of the season at 41.3 degrees.

Vineet Kumar, a noted weather scientist says, “As per the latest IMD-GFS forecast, the day temperature in Pune Shivajinagar will continue to be in the range 39-41c from 29 April to 5 May. No rain is expected.”

Why Such High Temperatures in Maharashtra?

Former head of weather forecasting division, IMD Pune says that the extremely high temperatures in the state are due to hot air coming from Gujarat towards Maharashtra and with the absence of rain, the soil is dry and heats up quickly, causing rise in temperatures. He also attributes the extreme heat to El-Nino phenomenon and the discontinuity of wind in the state.

When Does Weather Department Declare Heatwave?

The weather department declares a heatwave in any region when either of the following conditions are met:

  • Based on departure from normal temperature: When the actual maximum temperature is more than the normal maximum temperature by 4.5° to 6.1° Celsius
  • Based on actual maximum temperature: When the maximum temperature equals or exceeds 45° Celsius

Weather forecasts predict no significant respite from heat for the next five days. Solapur recorded the highest temperature in the state at 43.7 degrees Celsius while Mahabaleshwar recorded minimum temperature at 22 degrees Celsius.

Precautions are advised to prevent heat related illnesses. Avoid going out in the sun between 11 am to 4 pm.
