Pune, September 30, 2026: Booth Level Officers (BLOs) will visit the homes of voters who have been issued notices during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) for being unmapped or due to logical discrepancies.

This is based on a decision taken by the Election Commission of India (ECI) at its meeting on September 26.

The BLOs will collect the required documents from affected voters and upload them on ECINet for a decision by the Electoral Registration Officer (ERO).

These voters need note be called to the ERO or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) office for a hearing.

Only in exceptional circumstances, as decided by the ERO, will a hearing be held, preferably online.

If a hearing is required, the voter can authorise any adult member of the family to attend on their behalf. The Commission has also decided to strengthen facilities for online hearings.

District Election Officers (DEOs) have been directed to set up an adequate number of help desks or special camps, as required, for people living in night shelters, labourers, poor people and the homeless.

The Commission also decided to constitute a committee headed by a Senior Deputy Election Commissioner and including an independent expert from IIT or IIIT to review ECINet and check its compliance with the applicable Acts and Rules.

The ECI said field officers currently have role-based access to ECINet according to their statutory powers. Any further flexibility required by field officers will be made operational. New initiatives involving IT modules and portals will also be discussed by the Committee of Officers before approval by the Commission.

For Maharashtra, the deadline for filing claims and objections during the SIR has been extended to October 12, 2026, following a request from the state’s Chief Electoral Officer. The period for disposal of notices, claims and objections has been extended to November 10, 2026.

The Commission said people whose names were left out during or after SIR, as well as young and first-time voters, can apply to the concerned ERO for inclusion in the electoral rolls under the continuous updation process.

CEOs, DEOs and EROs have been directed to immediately launch a special enrolment drive for such voters.
