Pune: Significant Rise in Nighttime Temperature Recorded, says IMD

Pune temperature rise IMD report

Pune has witnessed a notable increase in its nighttime temperatures, according to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD). On March 29, the temperature in Shivajinagar escalated to 23.4 degrees Celsius, marking a 6.1 degrees Celsius surge above the usual levels. Surrounding areas such as Koregaon Park and Wadgaon Sheri also experienced temperatures ranging between 26 and 27 degrees Celsius.

Anupam Kashyapi, head of the weather forecasting division at IMD Pune, as per Hindustan Times, elaborated on the phenomenon, stating, “The maximum temperature is currently at a higher level and is constantly increasing, augmenting the Earth’s heat load. Starting from the night of March 28, increased clouding over Pune has resulted in reduced escape of longwave radiation, naturally leading to a warmer Earth and higher nighttime temperatures, making nights uncomfortably warm.”

Jyoti Sonar, senior meteorologist at IMD Pune, as per Hindustan Times, discussed the wider climatic influences at play, “A low-pressure belt extends from north Tamil Nadu to southwest Madhya Pradesh, passing through Karnataka and Marathwada. This system is influencing weather conditions across parts of Maharashtra, with the Vidarbha region expected to face heatwave conditions within the next 24 hours, and certain areas in the Marathwada region predicted to receive light rain accompanied by thunderstorms.”

The city of Pune is anticipated to have partly cloudy skies over the next 72 hours, with minimal changes in the temperature range expected. Recent records have shown that both the minimum and maximum temperatures in Pune have been consistently above normal for the past week, with the maximum temperature reaching a record high of 39.6 degrees Celsius on March 27.

Across the district, temperatures varied between 34.3 degrees Celsius and 41.1 degrees Celsius. The state’s highest temperature was 42.6 degrees Celsius at Akola, while Mahabaleshwar recorded the lowest at 21.4 degrees Celsius. Nighttime temperatures were above normal by six degrees Celsius in at least five districts. The IMD has issued a yellow alert, indicating light rainfall for multiple districts, including the possibility of very light rain in Pune.
