Pune: Shivneri Fort Implements Plastic Ban, Introduces Water Bottle Deposit

Shivneri Fort Plastic Ban

The Forest Department has taken a decisive step towards environmental conservation at Shivneri Fort by banning plastic items, with the sole exception of water bottles. This initiative is aimed at combating pollution and protecting the fort’s natural surroundings. Visitors are now required to leave a deposit of Rs. 50 for each water bottle they bring, which will be returned upon their exit.

This policy was rolled out on March 21st, aligning with World Forest Day, and has been met with widespread approval from the public. The fort now has dedicated teams at its entry points to ensure compliance with the new regulations and to confiscate any banned plastic items.

The inspiration for this move came from the successful implementation of a similar policy at Vasota Fort, underscoring the Forest Department’s commitment to environmental preservation. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness about the detrimental effects of littering, especially in areas of rich biodiversity like Shivneri Fort. The emphasis is on promoting responsible tourism practices that safeguard natural habitats for future generations, particularly against the backdrop of increased risks from plastic waste to wildlife and the exacerbation of forest fires.
