Metro Line 3, Pink Line, or Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Metro, whatever you prefer to call it, the residents of Rajeev Gandhi IT Park are desperately waiting for the service to start. However, the commencement of metro services on this corridor will only be half the battle won, unless there is seamless connectivity from office and residential complexes to the nearby stations.
PMRDA has realized this and has taken steps to ensure enhanced last-mile connectivity to 8 metro stations within the IT Park. Together, the metro trains and the last-mile connectivity options will provide a seamless access for the commuters from the IT Park to the rest of the city.
Tender has been floated to study and prepare the DPR for enhanced last-mile connectivity to Megapolis Circle, Quadron Circle, Dohler, Infosys Phase II, Wipro Technologies, Pall India, Shivaji Chowk and Hinjawadi Stations.
19.2 Km of Roads Identified Near Eight Stations
Maps included in the Request for Proposal (RFP) indicate approximately 19.2 Km of roads that have been identified to form the last-mile connectivity network. This network extends to up to 500 meters radius around the station and reaching up to 1.5 km in length. The distribution of this network around invidual station is as follows:
Megapolis Circle – 4.06 km: The network includes around 2 km of MIDC Phase III Road, approximately 0.27 km of road towards the cricket ground, about 1.21 km of Bhoirwadi Road, and around 0.58 km of Phase III internal road.
Quadron Circle – 3.67 Km: Three road stretches have been identified around this station, two roads in Phase III measuring approximately 0.86 km and 1.6 km, along with an approximately 1.21-km internal MIDC road.
Dohler Station – 1.53 Km: The last-mile connection is mainy toward the High Mount Road. The RFP indicates that the existing road is around 12-15 metres wide, while an 18-metre width is provided in the Development Plan.
Infosys Phase II Station – 0.5 Km: A relatively short last-mile connection of approximately half a kilometre is proposed, connecting towards the Emerson Innovative side.
Wipro Technologies Station- 1.1 Km: The identified connectivity is mainly along Park District Road.
Pall India Station – 1.59 Km: The network includes connections through Vibgyor School Road, Laxmi Chowk Road and Hinjawadi-Kasarsai Road.
Shivaji Chowk Station – 4.85 Km: This is the largest individual last-mile network among the eight stations. Roads to be enhanced include Phase I Road, Rajiv Gandhi MIDC Road and I2IT College Road, along with Marunje Road and Dange Chowk Road. The RFP indicates Development Plan widths of 18 metres for Marunje Road and 30 metres for Dange Chowk Road.
Hinjawadi Station – 1.85 Km Km: Roads identified around the station include the New Wakad-Hinjewadi Link Road, an under-construction street and Hirai Sitai Road.
What Will Change on These Roads
These roads will be upgraded to not just provide last-mile connectivity but to become important transit corridors. Pedestrian walkways, cycle tracks, bus shelters and other commuter amenities like street vending areas will be created. Since many users will be accessing the metro stations on foot, adequate pedestrian crossings are also being planned.
These roads will be well lit and provided with amenities like green zones, benches, public conveniences, waste bins and directional sighnages.
The RFP also mentions, wherever spaces available and right-of-way is available, plazas, markets or other public spaces to be created.
If executed properly, all these initiatives could make commuting to and from Hinjawadi IT not just safe and comfortable, but also inclusive and enjoyable.
