New Banaras–Pune Amrit Bharat Express Launched Today, Direct Rail Link Between Kashi and Pune Begins
VARANASI/PUNE – In a significant boost to regional connectivity and affordable travel, Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially flagged off the Banaras–Hadapsar (Pune) Amrit Bharat Express today, April 28, 2026. This new daily superfast service marks a milestone in linking India’s spiritual capital with the country’s premier IT and education hub, Pune, providing a high-tech yet budget-friendly alternative for thousands of daily commuters and pilgrims.
Strengthening the North-South Corridor
The introduction of the 22589/22590 Banaras-Hadapsar Amrit Bharat Express addresses a long-standing demand for more direct trains between Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Western Maharashtra. During the virtual inauguration, the Prime Minister emphasized that these “Amrit Bharat” trains are designed specifically for the “Aam Aadmi,” ensuring that modern amenities like high-speed travel and enhanced safety are no longer restricted to premium AC classes.
22589/22590 Train Schedule and Timings
Starting its commercial operations on May 1, the train will run daily.
- Train No. 22589 (Banaras to Hadapsar): Departs Banaras at 6:15 PM and arrives at Hadapsar (Pune) at 12:10 AM (third day) after a journey of nearly 30 hours.
- Train No. 22590 (Hadapsar to Banaras): Departs Hadapsar at 7:50 AM and reaches Banaras at 2:30 PM the following day.

The train covers a massive distance of 1,710 km, traversing through the heart of India including Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Maharashtra.
Key Stoppages Include:
- Uttar Pradesh: Gyanpur Road, Prayagraj Jn, Fatehpur, Govindpuri, Orai.
- Madhya Pradesh: Virangana Lakshmibai Jhansi, Bina Jn, Rani Kamlapati (Bhopal), Itarsi Jn, Khandwa.
- Maharashtra: Bhusaval, Jalgaon, Manmad, Ahilyanagar (Ahmednagar), Daund Chord Line, and Hadapsar.

Unlike traditional mail/express trains, the Amrit Bharat fleet utilizes push-pull technology with locomotives at both ends. This allows for significantly faster acceleration and deceleration, cutting down travel time despite the numerous halts.
The train consists of 22 coaches, primarily Sleeper (8) and General (11). Despite being a non-AC service, it offers:
- Safety: CCTV surveillance in all coaches and improved crash-resistant couplers.
