Matheran Toy Train: Mesmerizing train journey resumes tomorrow

Matheran Toy Train

November 03, 2023: As the festive lights begin to twinkle, the Matheran Toy Train is all set to chug its way back into the hearts of tourists and locals alike. Central Railway (CR) has joyously announced the resumption of the beloved mini train service in Matheran, a scenic hill station near Mumbai, right on cue for the bustling Diwali holidays, starting from November 4.

The Return of the Matheran Toy Train

In a release issued on Thursday, CR laid out the timetable for the eagerly anticipated return of the Matheran Toy Train. Travelers looking to escape the city’s hustle can catch two Down services from Neral to Matheran at the convenient times of 8.50 am and 10.50 am. Meanwhile, those returning can board two Up services from Matheran to Neral at 2.45 pm and 4 pm, respectively.

The Joyful Journey

Those looking forward to the nostalgic ride will be pleased to know that these four services will operate with a total of six coaches. This includes:

  • Three second-class coaches for economical travel.
  • One Vistadome coach for panoramic views of the lush green landscape.
  • Two second-class cum luggage van coaches for added convenience.

Moreover, adjustments have been made to the toy train services between Aman Lodge-Matheran-Aman Lodge that will also take effect from November 4.

A Schedule for Everyone

On regular days, the Central Railway keeps the joy of the Matheran Toy Train alive with six services operating in both Down and Up directions between Aman Lodge and Matheran. Weekends are even busier, with eight services scheduled in each direction to accommodate the increased footfall.

The shuttle services, much like their longer counterparts, will comprise three second-class coaches, one first-class coach for a touch of luxury, and two second-class-cum-luggage vans.

A Seasonal Pause and Safety First

Every year, operations of the Matheran Toy Train between Neral and Matheran are put on hold during the monsoon season, which stretches from June to October. This precautionary measure is taken for the safety of passengers and the preservation of the track. However, the service between Matheran and Aman Lodge, which serves as the gateway to Dasturi Point where motor vehicles are prohibited, remains functional.
