Lonavala Surpassed Once in Thousand Years Rainfall

Since the begining of July, it has been raining heavily across Maharashtra. However Lonavala has registered a once-in-thousand years rainfall event on July 05.

According to IMD records, shared by Dr. Vineet Kumar a noted weather scientist, Lonavala witnessed a once-in-thousand years event on July 05 with the town registering 670 mm of rain. Lonavala would receive 654 mm or more in one day only once in a thousand years.

Bhira, another observation point located in the Western Ghats also came close to witnessing a once-in-thousand years rainfall event, registering 608 mm of rain in 24 hours against the norm of 612 mm.

IMD also shared data on rainfall events at various windows of time for Lonavala:

  • 416 mm of rainfall is a once-in-25 years return event
  • 461 mm of rainfall is a once-in-50 years return event
  • 506 mm of rainfall is a once-in-25 years return event
  • 610 mm of rainfall is a once-in-25 years return event

The statistics point at the intensity of the rainfall the entire region is experiencing. Most of the rivers in the region are overflowing and breaching their banks. Most of the rail services and the road links between Pune and Mumbai are severed to due flooding and landslides.

Residents are being advised by the authorities to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing out unless extremely necessary.
