Abhinandan Varthaman, former Indian Air Force (IAF) Group Captain and Vir Chakra awardee, has embarked on a new chapter in his aviation career, joining Goa-based regional carrier FLY91 as a commercial airline pilot.
According to sources cited by Press Trust of India (PTI), Varthaman formally joined the regional carrier in August following his premature retirement from active military service. FLY91 confirmed Varthaman’s association with the airline, though it declined to share additional details regarding his flight training or operational schedule, wrote The Pioneer.
From Fighter Cockpits to Commercial Aviation
The transition marks a deliberate pivot from supersonic air defence to structured civil aviation. Commercial flights operate under a vastly different operational framework from tactical military flying. While fighter pilots are trained for high-risk combat engagements and rapid tactical decision-making, commercial operations emphasize standardized safety protocols, multi-crew cockpit coordination, and schedule consistency.
Varthaman’s current training with FLY91 is part of a structured bridge program designed to adapt his extensive military flight background to civilian systems and regulatory requirements. He is currently undergoing route-qualification training on ATR 72-600 turboprop aircraft, including flights along key regional sectors such as Goa–Hyderabad.

Born in Chennai on June 21, 1983, Varthaman was educated at Sainik School, Amaravathinagar, before graduating from the National Defence Academy (NDA). He was commissioned into the fighter stream of the IAF in June 2004.
