Pune Weather: Thunderstorms, Rain and Gusty Winds Likely from September 20 Evening; Satara, Sangli May See Heavy Rain
Pune: Rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely to return to parts of south-central Maharashtra, including Pune, from the evening of September 20, with the weather expected to turn more intense in several districts on September 21 and 22.
According to an independent weather observer, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the North Andaman Sea around September 19. It is expected to gradually intensify and move west-northwestwards through south Odisha and north coastal Andhra Pradesh over the next few days.
The developing system is likely to influence rainfall over Maharashtra, particularly the south-central districts, from the evening of September 20. Pune is also expected to be affected, with thunderstorms and lightning likely along with rain.
As per IMD weather bulletin, the weather could become more active on Monday and Tuesday, September 21 and 22. Pune district, including the Pune Ghats, is at risk of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds reaching 30-40 km/h at isolated places.
Satara and Sangli could experience comparatively stronger weather conditions during this period. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and heavy rainfall are likely at isolated places in both districts, with gusty winds reaching 40-50 km/h.
The Satara Ghats are also covered under the risk of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and lightning, along with winds of 40-50 km/h at isolated locations.
Sindhudurg is another district where thunderstorms and strong winds are expected on September 21 and 22. The district could receive light to moderate rainfall accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h at isolated places.
The Ghats of Kolhapur could also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and light to moderate rainfall. Gusty winds of 30-40 km/h are possible at isolated places.
Thunderstorm activity is also expected to extend into parts of Marathwada. Parbhani, Hingoli and Nanded are at risk of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, light to moderate rainfall and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h at isolated locations.
Several other districts have rain or thundershowers in the forecast, although no specific warning for gusty winds has been indicated in the information available. These include Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Dhule, Nandurbar, Nashik, Ahilyanagar, Solapur, Latur and Dharashiv.
The September 21-22 period is expected to see the more significant spell of unsettled weather. Satara, including its ghat areas, and Sangli face the possibility of heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms, lightning and stronger winds of 40-50 km/h.
For Pune and its ghat areas, the main concern during the same period will be thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 km/h accompanied by light to moderate rainfall. Sindhudurg is also expected to experience similar wind speeds during thunderstorms on both days.
The expected change in weather follows the likely development and west-northwestward movement of the low-pressure system from the North Andaman Sea, with its influence on Maharashtra rainfall expected to begin from south-central parts of the state from September 20 evening onwards.
