IndiGo Celebrates 20 Years of Operations with Anniversary Event at Pune Airport
Pune Airport joined nationwide celebrations on Tuesday as IndiGo completed 20 years of operations, marking two decades since the airline launched its first commercial flight on August 4, 2006. The anniversary was celebrated at Pune Airport by Team IndiGo PNQ in association with the Airports Authority of India (AAI), recognising the carrier’s growth into India’s largest airline.
The celebrations brought together airline employees and airport officials across the terminal. Staff members wore specially designed navy blue T-shirts marking the airline’s 20th anniversary along with traditional blue Maharashtrian phetas, reflecting a blend of the airline’s identity and local culture.
A ceremonial cake-cutting was held with a custom anniversary cake carrying the message “20 years of connecting the dots (2006-2026)”. The programme also featured traditional Maharashtrian dance performances, bouquet presentations to airport personnel and interactions with passengers and staff.
Congratulating the airline, AAI Pune Airport said IndiGo’s two decades of service have contributed to the growth of Indian aviation and wished the carrier continued success, safe operations and many more milestones in the years ahead.
IndiGo began operations with a single Airbus A320 operating between Delhi and Imphal via Guwahati on August 4, 2006. Over the past 20 years, the airline has expanded to a fleet of more than 430 aircraft and now operates nearly 2,200 daily flights connecting over 140 destinations in India and abroad.
The airline has carried nearly 900 million passengers during its journey, building its network around affordable fares, on-time performance and a high-frequency route structure. It currently accounts for more than 60 per cent of India’s domestic aviation market, making it the country’s largest airline by passenger traffic.
As it enters its third decade, the airline is preparing for further international expansion with an order book of more than 900 aircraft. These include long-range Airbus A321XLR aircraft and Airbus A350-900 wide-body jets, which are expected to support its plans to expand long-haul international services over the coming years.
The anniversary celebrations at Pune Airport reflected the airline’s long association with the city and highlighted its continued role in connecting Pune with destinations across India and overseas through one of the country’s busiest domestic aviation networks.
