Watch: Trump Rushed Out by Secret Service After Gunman Opens Fire at White House Correspondents’ Dinner; Suspect Cole Allen Arrested
Washington Hilton turned into a war zone as armed attacker storms security checkpoint — Trump safe, officer saved by bulletproof vest
Washington DC, April 26, 2026 — In one of the most dramatic and alarming security incidents in recent American political history, President Donald Trump was swiftly evacuated by the Secret Service after a gunman opened fire at the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner at the Washington Hilton on Saturday evening, April 25, 2026. The suspect, identified as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, of Torrance, California, has been arrested and is set to be arraigned in court on Monday.
Chaos at Washington Hilton: What Happened
The gala, one of Washington’s most high-profile press freedom events, turned into a scene of pandemonium at around 8:45 PM ET. Shots rang out near the security screening area just outside the main ballroom, sending hundreds of formally dressed guests diving under tables as Secret Service agents shouted “Get down!” and drew their weapons.
Trump, VP Vance, and Cabinet Rushed Out
Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and senior Cabinet members were immediately hustled out of the ballroom. House Speaker Mike Johnson and his wife were also escorted out by Secret Service. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt was similarly moved to safety.
Trump was taken to a secure holding area inside the venue and remained there before being transferred. The US Secret Service confirmed all protectees were safe and unharmed.

The Attack: Armed to the Teeth
The attacker, later identified as Cole Tomas Allen, charged through a security checkpoint in the hotel lobby armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He exchanged gunfire with law enforcement officers before being tackled to the ground and handcuffed.
One Secret Service officer was struck by a bullet — but was saved by a bulletproof vest. The officer was hospitalised, treated, and has since been released. The suspect himself was not struck by gunfire but was taken to hospital for evaluation following injuries sustained while being subdued.
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, who was standing outside the ballroom, witnessed the gunman “clearly on the ground shooting” just steps away from him. A police officer threw Blitzer to the ground after shots rang out.
Who Is Cole Tomas Allen?
A Caltech Graduate and Part-Time Teacher
Law enforcement sources identified the suspect as Cole Tomas Allen, 31, from Torrance, a suburb of Los Angeles. Allen is a graduate of the California Institute of Technology with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, and holds a master’s degree in computer science from California State University–Dominguez Hills.
He was employed as a part-time teacher at C2 Education, a test-prep and tutoring company, and was even named the company’s “Teacher of the Month” in December 2024. He also identified himself as an independent video game developer on his LinkedIn profile.
No Criminal Record, No Known Motive
Authorities confirmed that Allen had no prior criminal record and was not on the radar of Washington DC law enforcement. No motive has been established. DC police interim chief Jeffery Carroll described Allen as appearing to be “a lone actor.” Investigators believe he had been staying as a hotel guest at the Washington Hilton.
FBI Descends on Torrance Home
FBI agents assembled overnight outside Allen’s Torrance home. Police tape was strung up along part of the street as agents examined the property. The mayor of Torrance, George K. Chen, condemned the attack, calling Allen’s alleged actions “deeply troubling” and stating they did not “define our city.”
Charges and Legal Proceedings
US Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro announced that Allen would face two charges: using a firearm during a crime of violence, and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. He is due for arraignment in court on Monday.
“This individual was intent on doing as much harm and as much damage as he could,” Pirro said.
Trump Speaks: ‘Lone Wolf’ and ‘Very Sick Person’
At a late-night press conference at the White House, Trump praised the quick response of his security detail. “He was moving, he was really moving,” Trump said of the suspect. “And the reaction time was great. Those guys had their guns drawn — literally, by the time he was there, they were shooting. I thought they were very impressive.”
Trump called the gunman a “lone wolf” and a “very sick person,” adding that his security team had received no prior threat intelligence ahead of the dinner. He said the Secret Service officer who was shot was in “very high spirits” and that the bulletproof vest “did the job.”
Trump also posted images on Truth Social of the suspect lying face down on the ground following arrest, and said he had initially wanted to continue the event but was asked by law enforcement to leave per protocol. He has since pledged to reschedule the Correspondents’ Dinner within 30 days.
This Was Trump’s First-Ever WHCA Dinner as President
Adding to the significance of the incident: this was the first time Trump had attended the White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a sitting president. A fierce critic of the mainstream media, Trump had skipped the annual event throughout his first term.
FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed his agency will look “thoroughly” into Allen’s background and urged members of the public with any relevant information to come forward. Investigators are also reportedly examining the contents of Allen’s hotel room.
World Leaders Condemn Attack
The shooting drew swift international condemnation. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on X: “Violence has no place in a democracy and must be unequivocally condemned.” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he was “shocked by the attempted assassination of President Donald Trump.” Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum and Venezuela’s acting president Delcy RodrÃguez also condemned the attack. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin praised Trump for showing “incredible composure and leadership.”
The incident occurred, notably, at the same Washington Hilton hotel where President Ronald Reagan was shot in 1981 — a chilling historical parallel that was not lost on those in attendance.
