8 Double-Decker Flyovers Planned Along Pune Metro’s Extended Routes At Important Locations

An elevated metro rail track runs parallel to a multi-lane city road with cars, motorcycles, and an auto-rickshaw in traffic. The concrete pillars support the metro line above, while streetlights and overhead power lines line the route against a clear sky.

Pune Metro expansion has received a vertical lift. Authorities have finalized plans to construct double-decker flyovers at eight critical junctions along the city’s extended Metro routes. This ambitious infrastructure push aims to solve the city’s notorious traffic gridlock by stacking Metro rail lines on top of vehicular traffic lanes, ensuring that road widening doesn’t slow down rapid transit.

The proposal, confirmed on April 24, 2026, involves a high-level coordination between the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro), Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and MSIDC.

Full List: 8 Locations Identified for Double-Decker Integration

According to official reports, these integrated structures will feature four-lane or six-lane flyovers for cars and buses below, with the Metro corridor gliding above. The locations span the city’s periphery to connect growing suburbs:

  • Kothrud to Chandni Chowk: The Vanaz–Chandni Chowk corridor will see a major upgrade at the Kothrud Bus Depot Junction.
  • Nalstop to Warje-Manikbaug: Critical chokepoints like Karve Statue Junction and Ambedkar Chowk are on the list.
  • Khadakwasla to Kharadi: The plan includes Dandekar Bridge Chowk.
  • Mundhwa River Stretch: A flyover is planned at Mundhwa Chowk, a notorious bottleneck for IT traffic.
  • Hadapsar Corridor: The Racecourse to Akashvani (Hadapsar) route will feature a six-lane elevated highway integrated with the Metro.
  • Viman Nagar to Wagholi: A six-lane structure is planned up to Vitthalwadi on this high-density route.
  • Nigdi to Chakan: The Pune-Nashik Road will adopt the double-decker model to ease industrial traffic.

The Hadapsar Catch: Rs 5.8 Crore Repairs Before Demolition

While the long-term vision is clear, a short-term controversy is brewing at the Hadapsar-Gadital flyover. Experts recommend the demolition of the existing 2003-era Hadapsar flyover within the next 12 to 18 months to make way for the new double-decker bridge.

However, on April 23, the PMC standing committee approved Rs 5.8 crore for “emergency” repairs on the same flyover.

Why repair a bridge destined for the wrecking ball?
PMC officials argue that the demolition is not happening tomorrow. “The plans are at the planning stage. Hundreds of heavy vehicles use this flyover daily. To prevent structural issues now, immediate repairs are necessary,” said Standing Committee Chairperson Shrinath Bhimale.

Opposition leaders, including Nilesh Nikam (NCP), have slammed the move as a “waste of public money,” questioning why crores are being spent if the structure is to be razed within two years. The repairs include replacing expansion joints and bearings to keep the bridge safe for current commuters.

Beyond the 8 Locations: The Mundhwa-Kharadi Precedent

Meanwhile, work is progressing on other double-decker projects. The Mundhwa–Kharadi bypass route has already secured a Rs 126.63 crore tender for a double-decker flyover at Mahatma Phule Chowk.

  • Length: 1,080 meters (796m main bridge).
  • Timeline: Targeted completion within 24 months (excluding monsoon).
  • Utility: Designed to specifically decongest traffic flowing towards the Kharadi IT hub.

Pune’s Blueprint for Vertical Expansion

Pune is no stranger to this model. The city already operates double-decker structures near Abhinav Chowk (Nalstop) and on Ganeshkhind-Baner Road. MahaMetro MD Shravan Hardikar stated that all agencies are working together, aiming to finish projects ahead of schedule.

For Pune, where horizontal space is scarce and traffic is exploding, the future of commuting is no longer just wider roads, it is layered infrastructure.
