Mumbai Water Metro: 8 New Routes Revealed to Link Navi Mumbai Airport, Thane, and Kalyan

MUMBAI – In a massive push to revolutionize urban mobility, the Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) has officially set the sails for the Mumbai Water Metro project. Aimed at decongesting the city’s saturated roads and suburban railways, the ambitious project will introduce 16 routes in its first phase, including eight brand-new corridors that directly link the upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) with Thane, Kalyan, and South Mumbai.

Phase 1: 16 Routes and 26 Terminals Confirmed

The project, which has now moved from the drawing board to the execution stage with the floating of a Project Management Consultant (PMC) tender, is designed to utilize the MMR’s extensive coastline and creek network. Phase 1 will see the development or modernization of 26 terminals.

While eight existing ferry routes (such as Gateway to Mandwa and Belapur to Elephanta) will receive infrastructure upgrades and faster hybrid vessels, the highlight of the disclosure is the eight new routes that promise to slash travel times by up to 50%.

Connectivity to Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA)

The Water Metro is being positioned as a primary feeder for the Navi Mumbai International Airport. The disclosed new routes focused on airport connectivity include:

  • Vashi to NMIA: A direct creek route to bypass the Sion-Panvel Highway.
  • Belapur to NMIA: Providing a short-haul water hop for commuters from the CBD.
  • Gateway of India to NMIA: A premium cross-harbor link for South Mumbai travelers.

New Corridors for Thane and Kalyan

The northern suburbs and the extended metropolitan region are set for a major boost. One of the most significant new routes is the Kalyan – Dombivli – Mumbra – Kalher – Kolshet line. This route is expected to transform the commute between Thane and Kalyan, which currently relies on heavily congested road stretches or the central railway line.

Other key new routes include:

  • Vasai to Mira-Bhayandar: Connecting the western fringe across the Vasai Creek.
  • Bandra – Worli – Nariman Point: A coastal route aimed at office-goers along the western seafront.
  • Jessel Park – Fountain – Gaimukh – Nagla Bunder: Expanding the Thane water network.

Integrated Transit: The ‘One Mumbai’ Approach

The Mumbai Water Metro will not operate in isolation. Much like the Kochi model, these air-conditioned, electric-hybrid boats will be integrated into the One Mumbai Card system. This allows a passenger to use the same ticket for the Mumbai Metro (Rail), BEST buses, and the Water Metro.

With minimum fares expected to start at approximately ₹30, the government aims to attract middle-income professionals by offering a “predictable, air-conditioned, and traffic-free” alternative to private vehicles.

Environmental Impact and Tech

By deploying electric-hybrid vessels, the MMB expects to significantly reduce carbon emissions. These boats are designed for low-wake performance to protect the sensitive creek ecosystems while maintaining high speeds for commuter efficiency.
