Major Accident Averted: Uncontrolled Goods Train Hits 75 kmph on Mumbai-Pune Route; CR Investigates Crew Lapse
KARJAT – A catastrophic disaster was narrowly avoided in the early hours of Thursday, February 26, 2026, when a heavily loaded freight train lost control while navigating the treacherous Bhor Ghat descent on the Mumbai-Pune rail route.
The runaway goods train, consisting of 50 wagons, reportedly overspeeded significantly, reaching speeds of 75 kmph in a restricted 60 kmph zone. The incident occurred between Palasdari and Karjat stations, a section known for its steep gradients and technical challenges.
Drama in the Bhor Ghat: How the Incident Unfolded
The scare began at approximately 1:40 PM as the freight rake began its descent toward Karjat. According to Central Railway (CR) officials, the train started rolling uncontrollably down the slope. Panic ensued as the train exceeded the prescribed safety speed limits, sparking fears of a potential derailment or collision in the busy section.
Railway staff acted swiftly to manage the situation, eventually bringing the massive rake to a complete halt between Karjat and Bhivpuri stations. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to railway property were reported.
Human Error Suspected: Trainee Loco Pilots Under Investigation
Initial findings have shifted the focus from technical failure to operational lapses. Although a banker locomotive (a helper engine attached at the rear for braking support) reportedly developed a brake-related issue near Thakurwadi, a subsequent thorough inspection at Chowk station revealed that the train’s primary braking system was fully functional.
“Preliminary information suggests that trainee loco pilots were involved in operating the train and could not properly control the load while descending the slope,” a Central Railway source stated.
Central Railway Orders High-Level Inquiry
The Central Railway has officially termed the event a “major safety lapse.” A high-level inquiry committee has been formed to determine the exact sequence of events. The probe will examine:
- The role of the Ghat driver crews and trainee pilots.
- The performance of the banker locomotives during the descent.
- Why the overspeeding was not arrested earlier in the Palasdari-Karjat section.
Safety Concerns on the Mumbai-Pune Route
The Bhor Ghat section is one of the most sensitive rail stretches in India, requiring specialized “Ghat drivers” and mandatory braking tests. While the Karjat train accident was averted, the viral videos of the runaway train have raised serious questions regarding the deployment of trainee staff on high-risk freight missions.
Railway authorities have reassured the public that safety remains their top priority and that strict disciplinary action will be taken based on the final investigation report.
