Why the Extension Was Announced

Officials said many older vehicles were yet to switch to High Security Registration Plates. The department decided to offer more time so that owners can finish the process without last-minute rush.

What the HSRP Rule Requires

As per Supreme Court guidelines, HSRPs are compulsory for all vehicles registered before April 2019. The plates come with improved security features that help prevent:

  • Vehicle theft
  • Tampering of registration numbers
  • Use of fraudulent or fancy plates

An official from the transport commissioner’s office said that many vehicles still carry fancy plates where numbers are styled to look like English or Devanagari words. He added that this practice will stop once the HSRP fitment deadline is enforced fully.

Why HSRPs Matter

HSRPs carry secure identification details, including a laser-etched number and a non-removable snap lock. These features make it harder to alter vehicle identity. Authorities believe that full adoption will improve law enforcement and reduce misuse of number plates.

What Vehicle Owners Should Do

Vehicle owners should book appointments through authorised vendors and get the HSRPs installed before the new HSRP fitment deadline of December 31. This will help avoid penalties once strict checks begin in January.
