After a night of rain left several parts of the city waterlogged, Pune residents are bracing for more significant downpours. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has escalated its warnings, placing Pune and the surrounding regions on high alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall on Monday.

The IMD has issued an orange alert, indicating “be prepared”, for very heavy rain in the Thane, Mumbai, and Raigad districts, as well as the Konkan region and the western ghats areas of Pune and Nashik. Meanwhile, a yellow alert, meaning “be aware”, for heavy rain is in effect for the rest of Maharashtra, including the city of Pune itself.

This comes after overnight showers on Sunday caused waterlogging in various Pune neighbourhoods. The rain was significant enough that many residents took to social media platform X to request that local authorities consider closing schools and colleges for the day. Data from IMD observatories shows the extent of the downpour: Shivajinagar recorded 13.8mm of rain, while areas like Talegaon and Hadapsar received 15mm and 13.5mm respectively.

The broader forecast for the state suggests this is part of an active weather pattern. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rain and thunderstorms across many places in Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Marathwada throughout the week, with isolated spells of very heavy rainfall likely.

In short, it’s a good idea for people in and around Pune to be cautious. It’s wise to stay updated on weather advisories, avoid unnecessary travel, especially through low-lying areas, and be prepared for potential disruptions.
