Koyna (Navja) topped the chart with 174 mm of rainfall, followed by Pophlai with 163 mm, Lonvala Office at 106 mm, and Shirgaon at 70 mm. Other stations also reported significant rainfall: Walwhan (58 mm), Davdi (80 mm), Ambona (85 mm), and Tamini (75 mm). The seasonal rainfall so far has crossed 6,500 mm at Tamini, highlighting the severity of the monsoon this year.

Senior meteorologist K.S. Hosalikar said on August 18 that, as per IMD’s GFS model guidance, very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected over parts of North Konkan and ghat areas of north Madhya Maharashtra in the next 3–4 days, including Mumbai and Thane. By the fourth day, the weather system is likely to shift northward.

Earlier, IMD had placed Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Palghar on an orange alert, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall with wind speeds of 40–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph in some places.

Mumbai Situation
Mumbai will see heavy to very heavy rainfall till August 20, with light showers expected till August 23. On Saturday, parts of the city recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall, leading to severe waterlogging. Overnight rains inundated several low-lying areas and disrupted suburban train services. Tragically, two people lost their lives and two others were injured in a landslide in Vikhroli’s Parksite area.

Wider Impact
The weather department has also issued an orange to red alert for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch regions till August 20, forecasting heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

With the intensity of the monsoon showing no signs of slowing down, authorities have urged residents in low-lying and hilly areas to remain cautious.
