Heavy Rain Batters Ghats: Mahabaleshwar Crosses 3000mm, Tamhini Logs 210mm in 24 Hours; More Showers Likely Till July 27
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Very Heavy Rain Alert for the ghat regions along the Mumbai-Pune Expressway as intense monsoon activity continues to batter large parts of Maharashtra. The alert, which is in effect from July 25 through July 27, covers parts of Konkan-Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, and Vidarbha, warning of possible heavy to very heavy rainfall at several locations.
Mahabaleshwar Breaches 3000mm Milestone
The popular hill station Mahabaleshwar recorded 140.4 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, bringing its total rainfall for the season (June 1 – July 25) to an impressive 3003.3 mm. This milestone marks Mahabaleshwar as one of the wettest regions in the state for the current monsoon season.
Tamhini, Davdi, and Pophali Receive Heaviest Downpours
According to the latest 24-hour rainfall data for the ghat areas:
- Tamhini recorded the highest with 210 mm
- Davdi followed closely with 144 mm
- Pophali reported 141 mm
- Lonavla received 137 mm
- Dongerwadi got 115 mm
- Shirgaon witnessed 110 mm
- Ambona received 99 mm
- Bhira reported 85 mm
These regions are part of the critical ghat zones where rainfall not only affects road and rail transport but also poses risks of landslides and flash floods.
Pune Wakes Up to a Rainy Morning; Wet Spell Likely to Continue
Dr. Vineet Kumar (@vineet_mausam), a weather expert, reported a “good rainy early morning for Pune” in line with the IMD forecast. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in Pune city and surrounding areas till July 27.
Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai See Continued Rain
IMD scientist K.S. Hosalikar confirmed that Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai had received moderate to heavy rainfall since the early hours of July 25. In the past 3 hours:
- Mumbai’s K-West Ward, Borivali, and Navi Mumbai recorded 40–50 mm of rain
- Other regions reported 20–40 mm
From 08:30 IST to 11:30 IST on July 25, Mumbai rainfall was:
- Santacruz: 44.6 mm
- Vikhroli: 43 mm
- Juhu Airport: 40.5 mm
- Bandra: 37.5 mm
- Dahisar: 32 mm
- Sion: 30 mm
- Chembur (Tata Power): 13 mm
- Colaba: 5.8 mm
The rains are expected to continue in the afternoon with intermittent heavy spells. Citizens are advised to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Waterlogging in Bhiwandi, River Overflows in Gadchiroli
- In Bhiwandi, persistent rainfall has resulted in widespread waterlogging, affecting local transportation and daily life.
- In Gadchiroli, heavy downpours over the last two days have caused the Parlkota River to overflow, severing connectivity between Bharmaragad tehsil and the district headquarters.
High Tide Alert in Mumbai
At 12:40 PM on July 25, a high tide of 4.66 meters was expected in Mumbai. Given the simultaneous heavy rains, the BMC has urged citizens, especially those in low-lying or coastal areas, to avoid stepping out and to stay away from the seashore.
