Pune: PMC Implements Biosecurity Measures After Mysterious Deaths of 99 Chital Deer at Rajiv Gandhi Zoo
Pune, July 18, 2025 – The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated urgent biosecurity measures following the sudden deaths of 15 chital (spotted deer) at the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Wildlife Research Centre. The unexplained fatalities occurred between July 7 and July 12, 2025, raising concerns over wildlife health management.
Details of the Incident
As of July 7, 2025, the zoo housed 99 chital deer (39 males and 60 females). However, within just five days, 15 deer died without showing prior symptoms of illness, prompting an immediate investigation.
Nationwide Disease Testing Underway
To determine the cause of death, samples from the deceased animals—including organs and blood—have been sent to multiple high-security research facilities:
- Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Bareilly – National Referral Centre for Wildlife Diseases Monitoring and Prevention
- ICAR’s National Institute on Foot and Mouth Disease, Bhubaneswar
- National Institute of High-Security Animal Diseases, Bhopal
- Departmental Disease Investigation Laboratory, Pune
- Wildlife Research and Training Centre, Gorewada, Nagpur
Despite extensive testing, no definitive diagnosis has been confirmed yet.
Expert Consultations & Preventive Measures
The zoo authorities are collaborating with wildlife disease specialists from IVRI Bareilly and consulting the zoo’s health advisory committee for guidance. Meanwhile, disinfection of the deer enclosure has been completed, and veterinary staff are closely monitoring the remaining animals.
Improvement in Deer Health
Since July 13, 2025, the surviving chital have shown signs of recovery, and no additional deaths have been reported as of July 15, 2025. The PMC has assured that strict biosecurity protocols remain in place to prevent further casualties.
