Mumbai, June 2025 – In a transformative infrastructure push, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) is constructing a 17 km-long, six-lane elevated corridor to seamlessly connect the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (Atal Setu/MTHL) with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway (MPE).

With a budget of Rs 1,100 crore, this ambitious project aims to decongest key highways, slash travel time, and boost economic connectivity between Mumbai and Pune. The corridor is slated for completion by February 2027, with construction already underway at Atal Setu’s Chirle Interchange.
Project Breakdown: Two Elevated Corridors Linked by NH-348A
The MTHL Connector consists of two elevated stretches bridged by an 11 km segment of the existing JNPT Highway (NH-348A):
- Western Arm (3.657 km) – Connects MTHL’s Chirle interchange to Gavan Phata, bypassing heavy container traffic from JNPT Port.
- Eastern Arm (2.287 km) – Links Palaspe Phata to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, ensuring smooth access for Pune-bound commuters.

Once operational, the corridor will provide uninterrupted high-speed connectivity from South Mumbai to Pune, eliminating bottlenecks on the congested Sion-Panvel Highway.
Why This Project Matters
- Faster Commute: Professionals can live in Pune while working in Mumbai, enhancing work-life balance.
- Economic Boost: Improved freight movement for JNPT port-linked logistics.
- Traffic Relief: Diverts heavy vehicles from NH-348, reducing congestion.

Official Statement
Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, emphasized:
“This project is a game-changer for regional mobility. By integrating Atal Setu with the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, we’re ensuring seamless traffic flow and unlocking new economic opportunities.”
The contract, awarded to Gawar Construction Ltd, is progressing with excavation work in full swing.
The Bigger Picture
This 17 km elevated corridor reinforces Maharashtra’s position as India’s economic powerhouse, accelerating growth in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). With smoother transit and reduced travel time, the project is set to reshape connectivity in Western India.
