Pune on Yellow Alert, Maharashtra to See Reduced Rain Intensity in 48 Hours: Depression Off Konkan Coast to Make Landfall Today

Pune, May 24, 2025: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed Pune under a yellow alert as the city braces for isolated thunderstorms, light to moderate rainfall, lightning, and gusty winds reaching 40–50 kmph. Similar weather conditions persist across Maharashtra, with yellow alerts issued for most parts and orange alerts at a few locations due to the ongoing spell of unseasonal rain and rough weather.

Maharashtra Rains to Ease in 48 Hours
While unseasonal rain continues across the state, the intensity is expected to reduce after the next 48 hours, according to the IMD’s latest bulletin. The rainfall is being driven by a Well Marked Low Pressure Area (WML) that has now intensified into a depression over the East Central Arabian Sea.
As of 5:30 AM IST today, the depression was centered near latitude 17.2°N and longitude 73.0°E, approximately 40 km northwest of Ratnagiri. It is moving eastwards and is expected to cross the Konkan coast between Ratnagiri and Dapoli during the forenoon of May 24, 2025.

Gusty Winds, No Cyclone
The depression is causing gusty winds in parts of Goa and the South Konkan coast. However, weather scientist Dr. Vineet Kumar clarified that there is no cyclone. He urged citizens not to spread misinformation, stating, “Please do not spread any rumour of a cyclone. Every high wind speed event is not a cyclone.”
A trough associated with the depression now runs from the East Central Arabian Sea to South Chhattisgarh, affecting South Madhya Maharashtra, South Marathwada, and North Telangana at altitudes between 1.5 to 3.1 km above mean sea level.
Monsoon Onset Over Kerala Imminent
In a significant seasonal update, the Southwest Monsoon is set to begin over Kerala within the next 24 hours, the IMD confirmed. The Northern Limit of Monsoon (NLM) currently extends through:
5°N/60°E, 6°N/65°E, 7°N/70°E, 7°N/75°E, 10°N/81°E, 13°N/84.5°E, 16°N/88°E, 19.5°N/91°E, and 23°N/95°E.

Favorable conditions are building for the further advance of the monsoon over:
- Remaining parts of South Arabian Sea
- Lakshadweep area, Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu
- Parts of South & Central Bay of Bengal
- North Bay of Bengal
- Northeastern states
Residents across Maharashtra and adjoining regions are advised to stay updated with the latest weather alerts and not rely on unverified information regarding storms or cyclones.
