Pune-Nagpur Vande Bharat Train: Faster and More Comfortable Travel for Maharashtra Commuters Soon?

The much-awaited Pune-Nagpur Vande Bharat Express is inching closer to reality, with the Centre and Maharashtra government holding discussions to fast-track the project. Once operational, the semi-high-speed train is expected to drastically cut travel time between the two major cities, offering a major relief to daily commuters.
Currently, the journey between Pune and Nagpur takes nearly 16 hours, but the Vande Bharat Express could reduce this significantly, making travel faster and more convenient. Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently confirmed that he discussed the project with Maharashtra Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis, hinting at progress in the near future.
Railway Upgrades & Realignment for Pune-Nashik Corridor
During a press conference in Pune, Vaishnaw also announced major upgrades for Maharashtra’s rail infrastructure, with a focus on Pune. The Pune railway station is set for a major redevelopment, including world-class facilities and four new platforms. Similar upgrades are planned for Hadapsar, Khadki, Shivajinagar, Uruli Kanchan, and Alandi stations.
Additionally, the Pune-Nashik high-speed rail corridor is undergoing realignment due to concerns over its proximity to the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) in Khodad village. Scientists had warned that train movement could interfere with the observatory’s sensitive equipment.
“The GMRT is a globally significant facility involving 23 countries,” Vaishnaw said. “A new route is being finalised, and work will begin after state approval.” The GMRT, managed by NCRA-TIFR, houses 30 large antennas and operates on a critical frequency range, making its protection a priority.
With these developments, Maharashtra’s rail network is set for a major boost, balancing commuter needs with scientific considerations. The Pune-Nagpur Vande Bharat, along with station upgrades, promises a smoother, faster travel experience for thousands.
