Pune, September 13, 2026: Two people were killed and 12 others injured after a truck lost control and triggered a major multi-vehicle accident on the Pune-Bengaluru Highway near Dhayari shortly after midnight on Sunday.
The accident took place at around 12.10 am near Lakshmi Lodge at the Dhayari Bridge, also locally known as Dari Pool, in the Jambhulwadi area. Three of the injured are reported to be in serious condition.
According to information available with the police, an Ashok Leyland truck (MH 09 CU 7828) was travelling from Satara towards Pune when its brakes reportedly failed. The truck then rammed into an Eicher tempo (MH 11 CH 9007) travelling ahead of it.
Following the impact, the two heavy vehicles crashed through the metal railing in the highway median and entered the opposite carriageway, where traffic was moving from Pune towards Satara.
The vehicles then collided with a Maruti Suzuki Ertiga and a Tata Altroz coming from the opposite direction. Both cars were severely damaged in the collision.
The accident left 14 people affected. Hridaynath Mohan Gaikwad, 47, a resident of Jogeshwari East in Mumbai, and Anandibai Ramchandra Wadkar, 50, a resident of Nerul, Navi Mumbai, died while undergoing treatment.
Of the 12 people injured, three are reported to be in serious condition, while nine others suffered injuries of varying severity. The injured were taken to Bharati Hospital, Morya Hospital, Silver Birch Hospital and Shreyas Hospital for treatment.
Ambegaon Police have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Motor Vehicles Act, including Section 105 of the BNS relating to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Police have taken truck owner Sandeep Gorakh Suryavanshi, 45, of Khatav, into custody. Truck driver Pramod Vitthal Wagh, 40, also from Khatav, allegedly fled after the accident. Police teams are searching for him.
Investigators are also examining the truck and its braking system to establish the exact cause of the accident and determine whether there were any maintenance-related lapses. The reported brake failure remains under investigation.
The damaged vehicles were subsequently removed from the highway and normal traffic movement was restored in both directions.
The case has been registered at Ambegaon Police Station and further investigation is underway.
