MahaMetro has announced that it will enhance the frequency of its service and operate trains every five minutes during peak hours for the duration of Ganesh Festival.
Already on a normal day, the average ridership has reached around 2.5 lakh passengers and authorities expect manyfold increase in metro ridership during Ganeshotsav.
Presently Pune Metro operates trains at 6 minute intervals which will be reduced to 5 minutes during peak hours during the Ganesh Festival.
Pune Metro currently has 33 rakes in its inventory, out of which at any given time, 30 rakes are utilized. During the enhanced frequency timings, authorities will deploy all 33 rakes to accommodate extra trips.
Out of the 33 rakes, 17 rakes will be deployed on Vanaz-Ramwadi route and 16 rakes will be deployed on the PCMC-Swargate route.
The frequency of trains during nonpeak hours or noncrowded durations will be 10 minutes. Pune Metro currently operates 554 trips daily.
During the past few years, metro trains have been very popular with the commuters especially during Ganeshotsav as the roads get crowded and parking spaces are hard to find. As a result majority of people prefer to take a metro train rather than driving their cars.
