Pune Breaks July Rain Record as Red Alert Continues for Ghats
Pune city has crossed a major weather milestone this monsoon, surging past the 400 mm mark in July for the first time since at least 2014, revealed Dr. Vineet Kumar, a renowned weather scientist from Pune.
Shivajinagar recorded 37.5 mm of rainfall in the 24 hours ending this last evening, pushing the month’s total to 452.6 mm and the seasonal tally to 516.6 mm. Despite prevailing El Niño conditions, rainfall across Pune remains significantly above normal.
While the city itself is set to experience light to moderate showers today, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has maintained a Red Alert for the Pune ghat section, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. Neighboring ghat areas including Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Nashik remain under an Orange Alert for heavy to very heavy rain at a few places, with strong winds reaching 50–60 kmph and gusting up to 70 kmph.
