Maharashtra: Road Accident Deaths Down 6%; State Plans Trauma Care Facilities Every 50 Km
Mumbai: Maharashtra has recorded a 6% decline in road accident deaths between January and July 2026 compared to the previous year, the State Road Safety Council was informed during its 13th meeting at Mantralaya.
Transport Minister and State Road Safety Council Chairman Pratap Sarnaik directed the Transport, Police, Public Works and Health departments to work together to reduce road accidents and deaths in the state.
The meeting discussed providing immediate treatment to accident victims during the ‘Golden Hour’ and effective implementation of the ‘PM-Rahat’ scheme. Sarnaik also directed that 108 ambulances and private ambulances be brought onto a common digital platform.
The state will plan trauma care facilities so that capable treatment is available within every 50-km radius.
Road safety audits were also discussed at the meeting. Sarnaik suggested that 10% of Public Works Department funds be reserved for road safety measures.
Zero Fatality District initiative in 11 districts
The ‘Zero Fatality District’ initiative is being implemented in 11 districts — Nashik Rural, Pune Rural, Ahilyanagar, Solapur Rural, Jalgaon, Satara, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar Rural, Beed, Nagpur Rural, Kolhapur and Dhule.
Sarnaik called for an action plan based on data analysis in these districts to reduce accident deaths.
The meeting also discussed measures at accident black spots and the use of modern technology for controlling overloaded vehicles and pollution.
Public Health Minister Prakash Abitkar, Public Works Minister Shivendraraje Bhosale, Additional Chief Secretary of the Transport Department Sanjay Seth, Transport Commissioner Rajesh Narvekar and senior officials from the departments concerned attended the meeting.
