IIM Mumbai to Help With Traffic Management in Pune
Pune, October 16, 2026: Indian Institute of Management, Mumbai will study Pune’s traffic and suggest scientific measures to manage the ever growing traffic in the city.
Simply adding more roads and widening the intersections is not enough. There has to be a scientific approach to managing traffic in Pune, a city with a population of around one crore.
The population of the city is going to double in the next two-three decades. At present, there are about 81 lakh registered vehicles in the city and more than 1300 vehicles are added to Pune streets every day.
Looking at the exponential growth of city’s population and its vehicle numbers, the authorities had sought consultancy from IIM Mumbai.
A meeting was conducted to discuss various aspects of managing Pune’s traffic including, identifying congestion hotspots, major roads, road signal systems, coordination between PMPML and Pune Metro, the proposed Ring Road, use of modern traffic-management technologies and effective management of existing infrastructure.
The meeting was chaired by Murlidhar Mohol, Pune Lok Sabha MP and Union Minister of State. It was attended by senior IIM Mumbai faculty including Director, Prof. Manoj Kumar Tiwari and officials from Pune Traffic Police, along with representatives from MahaMetro, Public Works Department, PMRDA, NHAI, RTO, MIDC, and PMPML.
