Bengaluru Heatwave: City experiences highest temperature in 5 Years, weathermen issue heatwave alert

Pune weather update

Bengaluru, is currently grappling with an unprecedented heatwave, marking the highest March temperatures the city has witnessed in the past five years. On Friday, March 29, both Bengaluru city and the Kempegowda International Airport stations recorded a sizzling 36.4°C, setting a record not seen in recent history.

The Heatwave in Numbers

  • Record Temperatures: Bengaluru city and Kempegowda International Airport hit a maximum of 36.4°C, the highest in five years.
  • Comparative Data: According to A. Prasad, a scientist with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Bengaluru, this temperature is the fourth highest in the last 15 years and the third highest in the last decade.
  • Previous Highs: The city last saw temperatures surpassing 37°C in the years 2019 and 2017, with the all-time high for March being 37.3°C, recorded back in 1996.
  • Minimums: On the same day, minimum temperatures were reported at 23.6°C in Bengaluru city, 22°C at Kempegowda International Airport, and 21.6°C at HAL airport.

The Larger Picture Across Karnataka

The heatwave isn’t just confined to Bengaluru; it has its grip over the entire state of Karnataka. The India Meteorological Department’s forecasts do not predict any relief from the dry and scorching weather conditions prevailing across all districts until April 4. Certain districts have seen the mercury breach the 40°C mark, while others are not far behind, experiencing temperatures above 38°C.

  • Notable Highs: Kalaburagi registered the highest maximum temperature at a sweltering 40.9°C, followed closely by Bagalkot at 40.6°C, and Koppal at 39.6°C.
  • Heatwave Warning: The IMD has issued a heatwave warning for several districts, indicating that the coming days might see similar or even higher temperatures.

No Respite in Sight

The Bengaluru heatwave is a clear indicator of the intense summer ahead. With dry weather predicted to continue across Karnataka, residents are bracing for more sweltering days. The IMD’s forecast suggests no immediate relief, with no rain expected in the near future and temperatures likely to rise even further. Heatwave conditions are expected to persist in several districts, making it imperative for residents to take necessary precautions to stay cool and hydrated.

In the midst of this heatwave, the importance of staying informed and prepared cannot be overstated. Bengaluru, along with the rest of Karnataka, faces a challenging period ahead, and it is crucial for individuals and authorities alike to take appropriate measures to mitigate the impact of these extreme temperatures.
