A PMPML driver and conductor came to the rescue of a 17-year-old girl who fainted aboard a crowded bus in the early hours of October 29, rushing her to Sassoon Hospital without wasting time.
The incident took place around 1 am when a PMPML bus operating on the Hadapsar-Pune Railway Station route reached Mundhwa Chowk. The teenager, who was travelling with her parents and younger brother, suddenly collapsed.
After being alerted by the girl’s brother, conductor Gorakhnath Chavan informed driver Rajendra Nikam, who immediately diverted the bus to Sassoon Hospital. (Pune News)
Recognizing the seriousness of the situation, Nikam drove directly to the hospital’s emergency ward entrance. Chavan arranged a wheelchair and helped shift the unconscious girl inside. Hospital staff promptly attended to her and administered oxygen.
After doctors confirmed that her condition had stabilised, the PMPML employees resumed their journey. Nikam later contacted the family and learnt that the girl had recovered and returned home.
PMPML chairperson and managing director Mahesh Awhad praised Gorakhnath Chavan and Rajendra Nikam for their prompt action. He said their response reflected the commitment of PMPML employees to passenger safety and welfare beyond their regular transport duties, adding that the humanitarian gesture should inspire other employees.
