Pune: Police Ban Laser Beams, Powerful Beam Lights Near Lohegaon Airport for 60 Days
Pune, September 24, 2026: Pune Police have prohibited the use of powerful beam lights and laser beam lights in the air within a 15-km radius of Lohegaon Airport and the Civil Aerodrome for 60 days, citing the risk they pose to aircraft pilots during take-off and landing.
The order has been issued by Pune Police Commissioner Sanjay Darade under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023.
According to the order, powerful beam lights and laser beam lights are used during weddings and other programmes held at night around the Lohegaon Airport and Civil Aerodrome area. The beams are projected into the sky during these events.
The Indian Air Force has informed police that such lights can cause difficulty and distraction to pilots while aircraft are taking off or landing. Police said there is a possibility of an aircraft accident due to such distraction.
The order prohibits any person or event organiser from directing powerful beam lights or laser beam lights into the sky within a 15-km radius of the Air Field perimeter at Lohegaon Airport and Civil Aerodrome.
The restriction came into effect on September 22, 2026, and will remain in force for 60 days.
Anyone violating the order will be liable for punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
