The black BMW was travelling northbound from Marine Drive towards Haji Ali when the driver lost control while negotiating a curve near Lotus Jetty, opposite Lala Lajpatrai College.

CCTV footage captured the crash at 5.03 am. The Coastal Road Control Room was alerted at 5.20 am.

According to police, the car was travelling at high speed when the driver failed to negotiate the curve. It crashed through the outer barrier, snapped a light pole and tore through a Nariman Point directional signboard before going off the elevated road.

CCTV footage showed the BMW flipping twice in the air before landing at an under-construction car parking site below the Coastal Road flyover.

The three occupants who died were aged 21, 17 and around 19-20. They were declared brought dead at Nair Hospital.

The fourth occupant, aged around 20-23, survived the crash and is undergoing treatment in critical condition in the trauma ward at Nair Hospital.

All four were college students originally from Ahmedabad and were studying in Mumbai. The BMW belonged to Gajjal’s family.

The impact left the car badly mangled. Its roof was pushed inward, the windshield was shattered, the front bumper was torn off and the front portion was crushed, exposing engine components. Debris was scattered around the construction site.

Police officials at Tardeo Police Station said excessive speed caused the driver to lose control and break through the outer wall.

A mobile forensic unit cordoned off the crash site and collected physical and technical samples from the vehicle and the area. Police informed the families of the students in Ahmedabad and began recording statements from witnesses and acquaintances.

The Mumbai Coastal Road is a 10.58-km high-speed road connecting Marine Drive in South Mumbai with the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link.

Earlier this month, on September 3, Mumbai Police booked six to seven supercars, including a Lamborghini, BMW M2 and BMW Z4, for illegal racing inside the Coastal Road tunnel under Sections 281 and 125 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. A speeding Porsche has also previously crashed into a divider on the stretch.
