Pune: A 48-year-old IT professional out for his morning run was killed after being hit by a vehicle on NDA-Pashan Road in Pune at around 7 am on Saturday, September 12.
The deceased has been identified as Virendra Raghavendra Prasad Dwivedi, a resident of Pashan who worked as a software engineer with an IT firm in Hinjawadi. He was on his regular morning run when the accident occurred near the Maruti Temple and Necklace Garden area.
According to an eyewitness, the vehicle, which was heading towards Pashan Circle, hit Dwivedi from behind. The impact flung him into the air and onto the bonnet before he fell on the road and was dragged for some distance. The bonnet and windscreen of the vehicle were damaged in the collision.
The vehicle was being driven by a 19-year-old BBA student, studying in first year. The driver told police and witnesses that he had briefly dozed off while driving.
Fellow runners and the driver took Dwivedi to a private hospital in Bavdhan, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Chaturshringi Police obtained CCTV footage from the area and registered an FIR following a complaint by Dwivedi’s brother, Dhirendra Dwivedi. The accused driver has been booked under Sections 106(1) and 281 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
Police also noted that vehicles parked along the road by Saturday visitors to the Maruti Temple had reduced the available carriageway. The stretch near the temple does not have a dedicated footpath or running track, forcing pedestrians and runners to use the road alongside moving traffic.
