Spotted an Unsafe Food Practice? Here’s How to Report to FSSAI
Many times while dining out or ordering food at home, we notice unsafe food practices such as unhygienic conditions, the use of staple pins in food packaging, or food adulteration. However, most of the time, we simply ignore these issues or at most, stop purchasing from the concerned food business operator (FBO).
As vigilant citizens, we must stop ignoring these practices. If we collectively take action, we can gradually eliminate unsafe food handling and make outside food safer and more dependable for everyone.
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is urging citizens to transition from passive observers to active participants in maintaining hygiene standards across the country. Under its “Eat Right India” initiative, the national food safety regulator has launched a call to action encouraging individuals to report unhygienic conditions and poor food handling using its dedicated digital platform.
The initiative targets everyday violations that consumers frequently notice but often leave unreported, such as noticeably contaminated food, unhygienic restaurant kitchens, or reckless food handling by vendors. Rather than letting these violations slide, authorities are pushing citizens to “be the eyes of food safety.”
Turning Awareness into Action
To streamline this process, the regulatory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has introduced the Food Safety Connect mobile application. The digital platform is designed to make reporting seamless, effectively bridging the gap between vigilant consumers and enforcement officials.
The reporting mechanism is built on a straightforward three-step philosophy:
- One photo: Users can capture photographic evidence of the violation directly through their smartphones.
- One report: The app allows users to quickly log a consumer grievance, filing the details with or without a registered login.
- One step: Each report acts as a direct contribution toward creating a cleaner, safer food environment for the public.
Beyond lodging grievances, the app also serves a dual purpose for food business operators, offering direct access to the Food Safety Compliance System (FoSCoS) where users can apply for required food safety registrations and licenses.
Accessibility
FSSAI is pushing for widespread adoption of the tool to ensure community-wide compliance. The Food Safety Connect App is available for download on both major mobile platforms:
- iOS Users: Available on the Apple App Store
- Android Users: Available on the Google Play Store
By placing enforcement tools directly into the hands of the public, the regulator aims to foster a culture of accountability among food establishments nationwide. Officials emphasize that individual public vigilance is one of the most effective tools available to ensure widespread compliance with national food safety standards.
