Accident on the Newly Opened Missing Link on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

A side-by-side split image from the file Accident on the Newly Opened Missing Link.jpg showing the aftermath of a severe multi-vehicle pile-up on a highway bridge. On the left, a dark-colored SUV is seen severely crushed on top of a white sedan, with its rear tires completely elevated off the ground by the crumpled hood of the car beneath it. On the right, the side view of a silver SUV shows it wedged tightly against the wreckage, with a man standing nearby surveying the severe engine bay damage amidst heavy highway traffic and a cable-stayed bridge structure visible in the background.

A multi-vehicle collision occurred on the elevated, cable-stayed, Tiger Valley Bridge of the Bhor Ghat section of the newly inaugurated missing link of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway in the early hours of June 17th 2026.

A speeding Toyota Fortuner suddenly applied brakes while crossing the bridge. As the vehicles travel at high speeds on this section, the opportunity to apply brakes for the vehicles following from behind is very narrow and as a result, three cars traveling behind the Fortuner slammed into one another in quick succession.

No Fatalities Reported

Even though the accident occurred at high speed on a bridge over a deep valley, yet fortunately no fatalities were reported. However the cars involved in the crash were completely mangled.

The accident caused a massive traffic buildup as the morning commute hours resulted in high traffic volumes. Highway police and IRB patrol units rushed to quickly removed the damaged vehicles and restore normalcy in traffic movement.

MSRDC closely monitors the new link on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway and is currently in the process of installing wind barriers on the bridge to prevent vehicles being blown away due to high cross winds blowing in the valley.

It is important to observe traffic discipline, drive at a reasonable speed and avoid sudden braking to prevent such mishaps which could turn deadly in a split second.
