Two Pilots Dead, Dozens Injured in Devastating Runway Collision Between Landing Aircraft and Fire Truck

LaGuardia Airport plane crash

NEW YORK – A catastrophic runway collision at New York’s LaGuardia Airport (LGA) has left two pilots dead and at least 41 people injured after an Air Canada Express flight struck a Port Authority fire truck late Sunday night. The tragedy, which occurred during a high-speed landing roll, has forced a total shutdown of one of America’s busiest aviation hubs, triggering massive flight disruptions for international travelers, including those connecting to major Indian metros.

Fatal Impact on Runway 4

The incident involved Air Canada Express Flight 8646, a Bombardier CRJ-900 operated by Jazz Aviation, arriving from Montreal-Trudeau International Airport. At approximately 11:40 PM ET (9:10 AM IST Monday), the aircraft was completing its landing on Runway 4 when it collided with a Port Authority Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle.

The impact was devastating. Visuals from the scene show the nose of the regional jet completely obliterated, with the cockpit peeled back and wires exposed. The force of the collision caused the aircraft to tilt upward, while the fire truck was found overturned on its side nearby.

Casualties and Injuries Reported

Authorities have confirmed that both the captain and the co-pilot of the Air Canada Express flight were killed instantly.

Of the 76 people on board (72 passengers and 4 crew), a total of 41 individuals were evaluated by emergency medical teams.

  • Hospitalizations: 9 people remain in serious condition at local Queens hospitals.
  • Ground Injuries: Two Port Authority officers inside the fire truck sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, including broken limbs.
  • Survivors: 32 passengers have been treated and released.

ATC Audio: “Stop, Stop, Stop, Truck 1!”

Chilling recordings from Air Traffic Control (ATC) provide a timeline of the communication failure. The fire truck, designated as “Truck 1,” had been cleared to cross Runway 4 to respond to a separate emergency,an “odor reported” aboard a United Airlines flight.

Moments before the impact, a controller is heard frantically shouting, “Stop, stop, stop, Truck 1!” before trying to divert other incoming aircraft. In a subsequent transmission, a voice believed to be an official is heard saying, “I messed up,” though the NTSB has yet to confirm the identity of the speaker in the recording.

Global Travel Chaos and LaGuardia Status

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) immediately issued a ground stop, which has been extended through 2:00 PM ET on Monday (11:30 PM IST).

Impact on Indian Travelers:

  • Connections: Passengers traveling from India to New York via Air Canada (often through Toronto or Montreal) with domestic U.S. connections are facing significant delays.
  • Diversions: Over 500 flights have been canceled. Major carriers like Delta and United are rerouting passengers to John F. Kennedy (JFK) and Newark Liberty (EWR) airports.
  • Travel Advisory: Indian nationals currently in the U.S. or planning to transit through the Northeast corridor are advised to check their flight status via airline apps before heading to the airport.

NTSB Launches Major Investigation

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has deployed a “Go Team” to investigate the “runway incursion”—a high-priority category for aviation safety. Investigators will focus on the coordination between the tower and ground vehicles, weather conditions at the time (which included heavy rain), and the specific clearance given to the fire truck.

Jazz Aviation and Air Canada have expressed “deepest condolences” to the families of the deceased crew members and have activated a dedicated family assistance line at 1-800-961-7099.
